Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Approach Pushed

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the position in May, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an unprecedented summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Multiple members of the coalition, which represents victims and advocates from over thirty countries, met with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was characterized as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in North America.

They noted the leader was "compassionate" about their own story and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and compiled documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered document highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they informed the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a connection and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," Hickey commented.

They added that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
